Intern Shares Her Experiences - Wednesday, January 28, 2009
Dear All at The Education Channel,

I can’t thank you enough for such a wonderful internship experience.

When I first came to The Education Channel, I felt a little nervous about starting my first internship. After all, I had no experience with “filming” or editing. I hadn’t even held a video camera. But throughout the month, you all made me feel welcome by teaching me how to work a hand-held camera, a robotic camera, including me in staff meetings, and never being too busy to help me make dubs or give me feedback on my camera work.

I am especially grateful to Kimberly Stocker for having spent so much time teaching me how to edit videotape and handle a camera. She immediately put me to work on an actual project, and the hands-on experience was immensely empowering. By the time I left The Education Channel, I had edited three two-minute segments that immediately went on the “air” of the channel. And not only did I edit videotapes, but I also learned how to “film” my own material, studying the techniques and composition of capturing objects and people on camera.

Perhaps the best part of working at The Education Channel was that I could practice and learn and make mistakes. If I needed help, everyone patiently reached out a hand. If I needed feedback, I could always count on constructive criticism and encouragement.

Thank you for having made this internship experience pleasant and enriching. When I head back to Wellesley College, I hope to continue learning more about the world of television and building on my newfound skills.

Sincerely,
May-Elise Martinsen
